Excessive speed and poor driving conditions combined to claim a life this
Christmas season.
Chilliwack's Colton James Esau, 24, was killed on Zero Avenue in Langley on
Wednesday morning, when the 2001 Toyota Echo he was driving smashed into an
eastbound grader.
The oncoming construction vehicle and the westbound car hit head- on in the
eastbound lane, in the 25200 block of Zero Ave. around 7:30 a.m., Dec. 17.
"The road was wet, and it was foggy," said Langley RCMP spokesperson Const.
Christine Dinham-Jones. "It was pretty frosty down there, and that means the
roads were slippery."
She added that speed was definitely a factor in the fatal crash, and that the
young man had been "over-driving" in the poor road conditions.
In perfect road and weather conditions, drivers may be able to exceed the posted
speed limit and still maintain control of their cars, Dinham-Jones said, but in
the winter when roads are treacherous, even driving under the limit can still be
too fast for conditions.
Esau was pronounced dead at the scene. "It was very sad," Dinham- Jones said of
the collision.
(Emergency services personnel reported that the car's speedometer was frozen
at 168 kmph after the collision)
